In mid-July 2001, August Gold was on a three-day retreat in a Zen Monastery in upstate New York. On the second night, she wasn’t in meditation, prayer, or doing anything “holy” when it happened. August was by myself, in her cabin, when a strong feeling from within her said, “Open a Church in Manhattan on 9/9/01.”
The message was clear, the date specific– a mere six weeks to answer Spirit’s call. Six weeks?! August confesses that for the next twenty-four hours she wrestled with the decision until, inevitably, she said yes.

August Gold returned home to NYC at the week’s end and told her colleagues what was being asked of us: that we had six weeks to open a Church in the center of Manhattan with no location and virtually no resources.
“What’s the rush?” they asked.
August told them I honestly didn’t know.
Within a minute or two they, too, said yes.
And from that moment forward all the manpower, materials, musicians and money we needed showed up. Six weeks later, to the day, we opened our doors in a SoHo Yoga Studio on 9/9/01…
