In mid-July 2001, I was on a three-day retreat in a Zen Monastery in upstate New York. On the second night, I wasn’t in meditation, prayer, or doing anything “holy” when it happened. I was by myself, in my cabin, when a strong feeling from within me said, “Open a Church in Manhattan on 9/9/01.”
The message was clear, the date specific–I had a mere six weeks to answer Spirit’s call. Six weeks?! I confess that for the next twenty-four hours I wrestled with my decision until, inevitably, I said yes.

I returned home to NYC at the week’s end and I told my colleagues what was being asked of us: that we had six weeks to open a Church in the center of Manhattan with no location and virtually no resources.
“What’s the rush?” they asked.
I told them I honestly didn’t know.
Within a minute or two they, too, said yes.
And from that moment forward all the manpower, materials, musicians and money we needed showed up. Six weeks later, to the day, we opened our doors in a SoHo Yoga Studio on 9/9/01…
Still wondering what the rush was?
Two days later, we got it.
SCNY is a part of Spirit’s perfect plan for this great city.
Sacred Center changes lives.
It changed ours.
Come, change your life.
